CANCELLED - ISIN 2020, Kyoto-Japan

Dear colleague,

It is with regret to inform you that we have decided to cancel the ISIN EDUCATIONAL COURSE 2020 IN KYOTO. We have delayed this decision as long as we could; only a few weeks ago we were still positive and thought we all would be eager to meet colleagues again after a period of isolation. However, the rapid spread of the corona virus and the resulting severe travel restrictions make it impossible to go ahead as planned, or to predict whether we will be able to travel in November.

We discussed our options within the Executive Board and the Chairman of the Educational Committee, and we concluded that the cancellation would be the best solution. We have decided that the ISIN Educational Courses are about interaction and not ‘just’ about sharing information, and therefore, we do not want to replace the course by an online event. Nevertheless, we will spend our resources in Webcasts/ e-learning and look forward to sharing further insights soon.

Additionally, our focus now lays in the ISIN Congress and Educational Course in 2021 taking place in Chicago.

The above was not an easy decision to take but we hope you will understand. We are looking forward to finally seeing you in 2021. Stay safe and healthy!

On behalf of the whole ISIN team, warm wishes
The ISIN board

Welcome Message

It is my great honor and privilege to be able to invite to you to the 9th educational course of ISIN in Kyoto, Japan from November 25th to 27th 2020.
My name is Takanori Saito from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of Kansai Medical University. I cordially welcome you on behalf of the secretariat of the meeting. We’ve been preparing for the event in order to welcome as many researchers as possible who are majoring in intraoperative neuromonitoring from all over the world.

Intraoperative neuromonitoring using spinal cord stimulation – spinal cord recording was developed in Japan by Dr Kurokawa, Shimoji and Tamaoki in 1975. That technique was put to practical use through many animal experiments. Then intraoperative monitoring using somatosensory evoked potential was introduced from western countries. Finally intraoperative monitoring using transcranial electrical stimulation-muscle recording, which had been a long-awaited technique, was developed, and is now widely used. The Japanese Society of Clinical Neurophysiology has been championing intraoperative monitoring because there is no special organization for intraoperative monitoring in Japan. The Japanese Society of Clinical Neurophysiology was born 50 years ago and it will be with pride that we will hold the 50th anniversary meeting from November 26th to 28th in 2020. The educational course of ISIN is held in conjunction with this commemorative meeting. In Japan, not only orthopedic surgeons but also neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, otolaryngologists, and clinical laboratory technicians are involved in the research of intraoperative monitoring that is widely used. Intraoperative neurospinal monitoring committee was inaugurated in the Japanese Clinical Neurophysiology Association 4 years ago. This committee has accomplished many things such as opening seminars, making guidelines and establishing a board certification system. My research fellows and many of the staff are now working hard to make sure the educational course of ISIN will be successful.

Late November is the best season to visit Kyoto where many temples and shrines are colored with red and yellow leaves. I’m sure you can enjoy wonderful scenery. It will be my great pleasure if many researchers join this meeting, exchange hot debate about intraoperative monitoring and enjoy beautiful Kyoto. I’m really looking forward to meeting with you in Kyoto.
